Thanks to his boat, Boone beats me back to our side of the lake. Even though Iâd stopped running as soon as I passed Eliâs house, Iâm still out of breath when I see him standing in the road ahead, his arms folded across his chest like an angry parent.
âThat was a stupid and dangerous thing you did back there,â Boone says as I approach him. âTom would have caught you if I hadnât jumped in my boat and stopped him.â
âHow did you know I was there?â
The answer, I realize, is gripped in Booneâs right hand.
The binoculars.
Handing them to me, he says, âI borrowed them after I saw you walking past the house. I knew what you were up to and ran onto your porch to keep watch.â
âWhy didnât you stop me from going?â
âBecause I was thinking about doing it myself.â
âBut you just told me it was stupid and dangerous.â
âIt was,â Boone says. âThat doesnât mean it wasnât necessary. Did you find anything?â
âPlenty.â
We resume walking, making our way past where Boone is staying on the way to my place. Strolling side by side as leaves the color of a campfire swirl around us, it would be a lovely walkâalmost romanticâif not for the grim subject matter at hand. I tell Boone about how Katherineâs rings, phone, and clothes are still in her bedroom before getting into what I found on Tomâs laptop, including Harvey Brewer.
âTom was slowly poisoning her,â I say. âJust like what this guy did to his wife. Iâm certain of it. Katherine told me she hadnât been feeling well. She kept getting suddenly weak and tired.â
âSo you think sheâs dead?â
âI think she found out about it. Hopefully, she ran. But thereâs a chance . . .â
Boone gives me a somber nod, no doubt thinking about the tarp, the rope, the hacksaw. âTom got to her before she could.â
âBut we have proof now.â I grab my phone and start swiping through the photos I took. âSee? Thatâs the article about Harvey Brewer, right on Tomâs own laptop.â
âItâs not enough, Casey.â
I stop in the middle of the leaf-strewn road, letting Boone walk several paces ahead before he realizes Iâm no longer at his side.
âWhat do you mean itâs not enough? I have pictures of Katherineâs phone and clothes, not to mention proof her husband was reading about a man who murdered his wife.â
âWhat I mean,â Boone says, âis that itâs not legal. You got all that stuff by breaking into their house. A crime thatâs worse than spying.â
âYou know whatâs even worse?â I say, unable to keep an impatient edge out of my voice. âPlanning to kill your wife.â
I still havenât budged, forcing Boone to come back and wrap one of his big arms around my shoulders to get me moving again.
âI agree with you,â he says. âBut thatâs how the law works. You canât prove someone committed a crime by committing another crime. In order to really nail him, we need some kind of evidenceânot gained illegallyâthat could point to foul play.
